The next day I go to visit Kira while she's working at Gameland. I find her in the front reception area where there is a sleek, black, leather couch with a low, glass coffee table right in front of it. She is deeply engrossed in a conversation with Tyler, who is sitting on the floor across from her.

“I can guarantee you, Ramon is the one who did it,” Tyler is telling Kira with conviction. I realize what they're talking about right away, and I find myself disinterested. Everyone keeps wanting to blame Ramon for all the vandalism that's been going on with no evidence that he was involved, aside for the lame “fight” that we had. Besides, why should I believe Tyler any more than anybody else?

“How do you know he did it?” I ask, inviting myself into the conversation, and also looking to determine if perhaps he may be a better source of information than I'm assuming he is.

“Because, nobody knows where Ramon was the night my window got smashed. AND nobody knows where he was the night all that other shit happened. Even his sister doesn't know where he was.” Tyler pauses and gives us a dramatic look, and I can see that Kira's eyes are wide; she's lapping up his every word. But, Tyler still hasn't convinced me. There's no hard evidence, so I do my best to play along, trying to cover up my lack of enthusiasm at his “evidence.” Tyler takes a deep breath, and I can tell he's just getting on a roll. “I know Ramon was mad at Kira, and then, what do you know? A window here at Gameland was broken the day she returned from Russia.”

“He was mad at me?” Kira asks. I can hear the hurt in her voice.

“Yes, I think he mentioned something about you 'causing problems,' ” Tyler tells her. This seems too vague. And also, I can't remember a time when Kira caused problems with Ramon before she left for Russia. “Ramon didn't like when I was asking him about what happened with Gameland's window and Mackenzie's car. He kept telling me to 'shut up.' Then, that night, my window gets broken,” Tyler says.

Unable to take it anymore, I say, “But this is not hard evidence. This is not anything that the cops would be able to do anything with.” Really, all I am seeking is hard evidence. Not any of this speculation. Everyone is speculating, but nobody has any proof.

“I know.” Tyler looks at me as though he feels pinned in a corner, his mouth skewed to the side, and his eyebrows raised. “That's why nobody can do anything about it. I'm telling you, Ramon is smart. He knows how to get away with things and leave no trail. That's how he gets away with it.”

I am finished with hearing everyone talk crap about Ramon. Nobody has any proof to back what they say.

To my surprise, later that evening I get a phone call from Ramon. “Mackenzie, I've wanted to tell you, I do know who has been causing all this shit lately.
